But we can't find a door that is exactly the same style and width. Can we buy a 32-inch-wide door and trim it down to fit the existing 30-inch-wide opening?

To paint a paneled door, start with the moldings around the panels, then paint the panels themselves. Paint the rails and stiles last. Where rails and stiles meet, paint across the joint on the first piece, then smooth out the overlap when you brush the second one.
