Q&A

Q: Our 90-year-old bungalow has tapered wood columns in front that hold up the roof over our enclosed porch. One of the columns seems to be deteriorating, but I don't know how to repair it or what materials to use. Do you have any suggestions?

Tips

Most porch swingers are sedate, but just in case, you'll need 2 feet of clearance at each end of the swing, and at least 30 inches front and back, to avoid colliding with the house and the porch railings.
