In This Guide: What Is Prime Day? | Prime Memberships | How To Get a Good Deal | Conclusion
Prime Day is a 48-hour sales extravaganza with an extensive selection of discounted merchandise in categories ranging from tools to tech and everything in between. Along with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and October Prime Day, Prime Day is one of the best days of the year to score deals, but it is only available to active Prime members. In our guide below, we’ll tell you all you need to know about Prime Day 2024, including how to find the best deals.
What Is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is Amazon’s exclusive sales day for Prime members. It features sales on tens of thousands of products in every category from hundreds of top brands. Prime Day typically takes place in the summer and is one of the major online shopping days of the year, along with October Prime Day (also known as Prime Big Day Deals) and Black Friday and Cyber Monday in November. It began in 2015 and has continued to grow in scale in the decade since.
When Is Prime Day?
Prime Day 2024 will begin on Tuesday, July 16, with most sales beginning at 12:01 a.m. PT (3:01 a.m. ET). They will continue through Wednesday, July 17, at 11:59 p.m.
Who Is Eligible for Prime Day?
Only Amazon Prime members are eligible for savings on Prime Day. If you’re not yet a Prime member, you still have time to sign up before Prime Day, and you can also use a 30-day free trial to take advantage of Prime Day deals. You can also sign up for the This Old House Shopping newsletter to get deals delivered to your inbox during the event.
There are also specific storefronts you can browse, such as the Back to School and the Off to College Shop. There are even some early Prime Day deals already available 33% off an INSIGINA 50-inch TV, 50% off a Ring Video Doorbell, and 45% off an ECHO Show 5 Kids.
Invite-Only Deals
Invite-only deals are another sale option, but they require requesting a notification in advance to deals that are likely to sell out. To set up an invite-only deal, browse the deals page and search for invite-only products. Once you’ve found an invite-only product you’re interested in, request an invitation on the product page near the “Add to Cart” button. Some of the top invite-only deals to look for include 40% off of Sony headphones and 30% off of Peloton products.
Amazon Wishlist
If there’s an item that you’re hoping goes on sale, make sure to add it to your wishlist now. Amazon will send an alert when the item goes on sale. You can also ask Alexa to let you know if anything on your wishlist, save-for-later list, or shopping cart is on sale.
Learning To Spot the Best Deals
While there is no shortage of deals on Prime Day, not all deals are created equal. Here are some tips for making sure you’re getting a good deal.
- Check the percentage off the regular price (20% off or more is often a good deal, depending on the product)
- If the Amazon listing says “lowest price in 30 days,” it often signifies that the product has a steeper discount than usual.
- Look at different colors or models of the item you want if they exist—sometimes there are significant differences. Many manufacturers also put last year’s models on sale at a steeper discount.
- Compare with other retailers to check if the Prime Day price is lower than average.
How Long Do Deals Last During Prime Day?
Not every deal lasts throughout the duration of Prime Day. Lightning deals last only for a limited time—typically about 2 hours—and are staggered throughout the course of the two days. Lightning deals are also limited by quantity, so popular products may sell out before the time limit. Check Amazon’s homepage or your notifications regularly to see what lightning deals are currently in effect. New deals also become available as often as every five minutes, so if you don’t see a product on sale yet, keep checking back regularly.
Our Conclusion
With a little preparation and a few day-of tools, you can score big deals during Prime Day. Knowing what you’re looking for is good—but a little window shopping won’t hurt. The exact brand or model you want may not go on sale, but Amazon offers so many alternatives that you may find an equivalent item at a big discount.
Don’t forget to check the site throughout the 48-hour window since many deals are time-limited.
