Work has begun on the 1887 Victorian in Glen Ridge, NJ, to make it suitable for multigenerational living. The homeowners, Sunita and Shankar, are downsizing to the third-floor attic space to share the home with their daughter and son-in-law.
Most of the progress is on the third floor, where demolition is underway. During the process, a vintage bottle of 1887 Bordeaux was discovered in the walls.
Tom Silva and builder Zack Dettmore continue the demo, working together to remove the existing brick chimney and reframe the roof opening.
Kevin O’Connor also has a one-on-one with Zack to talk about how he got his start in construction.
Since over 90% of the community is in a historic district, it’s essential for the homeowners that the house is restored to much of its original integrity. Architect Dan Kopec shares his plans to achieve this, which include elements such as an open porch balustrade, turned columns, and diamond shingles.
Richard Trethewey meets with Mayor Stuart Patrick to learn about the borough’s history and one of its most distinctive features—the gas lamps.
At the house, the existing asbestos siding is being removed, and asbestos remediator Edwin Precilla discusses how he keeps the site and his workers safe during the process.
