The house’s exterior has been restored to its original 1887 Victorian look. The asbestos shingles have been replaced and new diamond pattern shingles were added on the third floor, and new floor-to-ceiling posts line the front porch.
Along with restoring the original Victorian look, great effort has gone into making the house airtight, so energy auditor Beth Armstrong reveals the result of a blower door that determines the home’s airtightness.
Tom Silva and builder Zack Dettmore work together to install a baseboard with a radius detail specified by the architect, as a focal point at the entrance of the house.
In response to a loss of shade trees around 2010, the borough of Glen Ridge formed the Glen Ridge Borough Shade Tree Commission. Jenn Nawada meets with the chair of the commission, Elizabeth Baker, to learn about how they select the new trees for their streets.
Inside the house, tiler Gary Moreland shares how he achieves a perfect tile layout around a shower niche, and Kevin O’Connor lends carpenter Kalen Gomez a hand installing a prefabricated window casing.
