Since work started on the 1887 Victorian, there has been considerable development. The old front porch has been taken down, exposing the original cedar shingles, which are in bad shape. Due to termite damage, the existing addition and the main floor framing are being replaced. The second-floor framing is also being replaced, and framer Sean McAllen explains why.
The new floor system on the main floor calls for new lally columns in the basement, so Kevin O’Connor helps builder Zack Dettmore dig footings for them.
Jenn Nawada takes a trip to a local community garden where she gets a tour from Garden Association President Kevin Sherry and learns about its connection to the project house.
Back at the house, Tom Silva and Zack install sleepers to the existing addition slab to make it level with the new floor system. A rigid insulation board is added for a thermal break.
Kevin talks to Brandon, the youngest member of the construction crew. Brandon is a 15-year-old high school student who spends his summers framing with his father and uncle. He shares the lessons he’s gained and offers advice to young people who are also interested in getting started in the trades.
The original clay sewer line is replaced with a trenchless system, and Richard Trethewey follows along with plumber Craig Scott and his team to see how the process is carried out.
