S44 E14: Bed Race

Renovation on the 1902 house is done, and the homeowners are ready to move in, but first, the crew and homeowners participate in the town’s annual bed race. After, they meet at the house for a tour.

It’s a special day in Newburyport, MA. Renovation on the 1902 house is done, and homeowners Palen and Melissa and their daughter are ready to move in, but first, they’ve invited the This Old House crew to be a part of the annual Yankee Homecoming Bed Race—an event that’s part of an annual weeklong celebration and one of the things that they feel makes their community special.

After the race, the crew meets at the house for a tour. Melissa gives Kevin O’Connor a tour of the first floor, starting in the living room, which was enlarged after reclaiming the screened-in porch as interior living space, then working their way back through the new wide-open dining room.

Palen gives Tom Silva a tour of the second floor, including the new primary suite with a steam shower in the bathroom, and a tour of the newly finished attic turned playroom and office.

Richard Trethewey and plumber Brian Bilo discuss the new HVAC system and mechanicals. As an extra safety measure, Brian has installed an automatic gas shut off in case of a leak.

There’s as much change outside as there is inside. Jenn Nawada and Melissa talk about the square footage gained with the new bump out, the new basement entrance, and the defined spaces in the backyard.

They make their way to the front of the house where Charlie Silva, as a finishing touch, is installing the historical plaque and admire the transformation there.
