The entire team at Ask This Old House is partnering with an organization that focuses on giving back. Rebuilding Together Boston is a local chapter of a nationwide volunteer organization that fixes homes and revitalizes communities, and it has a very special project it’s working on in the heart of Dorchester, Massachusetts—a neighborhood in Boston.
The project home is a corner lot in the neighborhood, occupied by Roz. Roz purchased the house in the neighborhood in 1999 and considers herself a “community liaison.” When she first moved in, the neighborhood suffered from drugs, crime, and gangs, but by working together with her community, it’s been revitalized into the thriving neighborhood it is today.
But, Roz’s outdoor entertainment spaces aren’t thriving as much as the neighborhood. As a lot on a corner, she has plenty of space but a lack of privacy. Also, her deck is in disrepair, preventing her family and friends from using it like they used to. But these are the issues Rebuilding Together Boston and the Ask Team are here to solve.
Join the crew as they give Roz’s backyard the face-lift, privacy, and safety it deserves. Kevin, Tommy, Nathan, Jenn, Mark, Ross, and a host of volunteers work together to bring this special backyard space up to snuff for a special homeowner.
Volunteer Day 1: Meet the Homeowner
Host Kevin O’Connor takes us to Dorchester, Massachusetts to partner with Rebuilding Together Boston in helping a very special homeowner.
Volunteer Day 2: Demolition and Patio Prep
The Ask team gets to work at the Rebuilding Together Boston job site, removing the old deck with surgical precision while also preparing the corner of the lot for a beautiful brick patio.
Volunteer Day 3: Framing and Landscaping
Host Kevin O’Connor takes us back to the Rebuilding Together Boston job site to rebuild the deck while also giving the yard some fresh new landscaping.
Volunteer Day 4: Completion
The crew and an army of volunteers fight the rain to bring the Rebuilding Together Boston project to completion.
