Carpenter Nathan Gilbert tells us why he loves flea markets. Nathan shows us some of his favorite tool finds and gives us his best tips for finding the treasures buried under piles of stuff.
Next, Nathan takes us on a road trip to help a homeowner solve a storage issue. With their second baby on the way, the homeowners want to turn their children’s closet into a more efficient storage solution. Nathan and the homeowner work together to remove the old shelving and install a new, custom-built closet organizer system.
After that, we meet host Kevin O’Connor back at the shop as he talks with home technology expert Ross Trethewey about radon. Ross teaches Kevin everything he needs to know about radon, including danger levels, how to detect it, and how to mitigate it to keep homes healthy and safe.
Finally, paint expert Mauro Henrique takes us to a homeowner’s garage, where her son’s graffiti art is ready for covering. Mauro shows the homeowner how to prep for paint, but also how to prime over existing paint that might bleed through. The two then work together to paint the garage for a fresh new look.
Flea Market Finds
Carpenter Nathan Gilbert loves a good flea market. Being outside in the summer in a completely packed flea market is one of his favorite ways to spend a Sunday. Here’s what he tells us.
How to Build Nursery Closet Shelving
With a new baby on the way, and the plan being for two children to share a room, storage can be an issue. When a homeowner reached out to carpenter Nathan Gilbert for this exact issue, he knew what to do. With the help of the homeowner, Nathan builds a custom closet organizer system that provides plenty of storage while also being flexible.
Where to find it?
Nathan uses some plywood and a shelving kit to customize a nursery closet.
After demoing the old closet, use a level or yard stick to pencil in the layout lines.
¾” cabinet-grade plywood is used to build panels and shelving. ¾” screen stop is glued and stapled to the edge. Hand sand the plywood with 100-grit sandpaper.
Use a miter saw to cut the closet rods to length. Mount closet rods to the pole sockets.
Use trim head screws to apply cleats to the wall.
Understanding Radon Testing
Ross Trethewey explains why homeowners should test for radon and shares a few professional and DIY options.
Where to find it?
Radon fans are used in radon mitigation to reduce the concentration of radon gas in a building.
Radon electronic testers are a great option for continuous radon monitoring.
One-time radon testing home kits can be obtained through the American Lung Association.
How to Paint Over Spray Paint Graffiti
Mauro Henrique helps a homeowner repaint her garage wall that her son had previously spray-painted with graffiti art.
Where to find it?
Mauro begins prepping the space by vacuuming and wiping the walls to ensure they’re clean and free of dust. Next, he protects the floors by laying out a drop cloth. He also uses painter’s pre-taped masking film to tape off the shelves on the walls.
Mauro and the homeowner apply an oil-based primer to the walls using 3/4” nap fabric rollers and extension poles to account for the tall ceilings. For the paint, Mauro uses an acrylic flat white paint.
