Consistent with the mid-century-modern features of the original house, the rear addition is a mix of metal, wood, and glass. It was built to bring son Caffrey, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, closer to his parents. Before, their rooms were on separate sides of the house.
Down in the basement, the new mechanical room is revealed. Early in its construction, Charlie Silva called a summit of all involved in the house’s mechanicals to discuss the layout of the different systems in the space. Now built up, a walkthrough tour is given.
On the exterior, a third siding material—a wood veneer product, has been installed at the garage and on the soffits. In line with the courses of the new siding, Heath Eastman installs in-wall pathway lights to illuminate the new integrated front ramp.
Plumbing fixture installation is underway in Caffrey’s bathroom, focusing on accessibility. Richard Trethewey assists plumber Abe Bilo with installing an offset drain, allowing wheelchair access underneath the wall-hung sink.
Kevin O’Connor visits a local glass-blowing studio where the homeowners’ oldest son, Wix, is a student and is assisting glass artist Andrew Iannazzi and instructor Emery Wenger with making a custom blown glass light fixture for the foyer.
Back at the house, in Caffrey’s bathroom, Tom Silva begins installing the necessary support bars and fold-down shower seating, as specified by the accessibility consultant.
