Like many of the companies in our top five, it offers a wide variety of moving services and operates as a carrier only, so you can be sure your move will be handled by its in-house team. What sets the company apart is its large network of international agents. This extensive network helps simplify the complex logistics of overseas moves, such as customs and regulations, making it ideal for Texas moving customers relocating to or from another country.

Allied Van Lines also does interstate, intrastate, and local moves, whereas some other providers on our list only do moves to or from Texas, not within the state. Plus, it offers more flexible storage options than other movers we reviewed, including temporary, long-term, and portable solutions. This makes it easier to keep your belongings safe and accessible if you’re facing timing issues or temporary housing needs.

On the downside, Allied’s claims process for damaged or lost items has been described as slow and complex by some customers. While many companies move appliances, North American Van Lines is the only mover we noticed that installs appliances, too. This can make setup at your new home easier, so you’re not stuck without a working oven until an installer can come to your home.  NAVL is also the only mover we reviewed that uses WorldTrac, a satellite tracking system, to allow customers to monitor their shipments in real time. This feature is particularly nice for Texas moves, where distances can be vast and remote areas surround major cities. Other movers use GPS tracking, which doesn’t work as well in places with poor cell service.

While NAVL is comparable to our No. 1 pick, Allied Van Lines, we rated it lower because it operates as both a carrier and broker. This means it sometimes works with third-party movers and agents, which can result in inconsistent service quality, depending on the local partner handling your belongings. To mitigate this risk, we recommend researching reviews of the specific third-party agent assigned to your move and communicating with NAVL if you’d prefer a different mover.

Another drawback is that North American Van Lines requires you to get an in-home inventory for an accurate quote, which can be inconvenient. Keep in mind that JK Moving only does moves to or from Texas. If you’re moving to another area within the state, you’ll need to use a different mover, such as Allied Van Lines or Safeway Moving Inc. We also like that IVL can ship your belongings and car in the same container at a discounted price, as it makes things more straightforward and cost-effective.

For customers with smaller moves, IVL’s consolidation service can be a great money-saver. This option lets you share a container with another mover, paying only for the space you need.

However, IVL only uses nonbinding estimates, which can lead to surprises on your final bill. This means your price may increase if your move’s actual weight or volume is more than initially estimated. IVL also doesn’t do local or intrastate moves, so if you’re moving within Texas, you’ll need to go with another provider like Allied Van Lines or North American Van Lines.

Safeway Moving Inc.’s price-matching policy helps keep rates competitive in Texas, where national companies vie for business. Keep in mind that the company will only price-match other large moving companies, such as Allied Van Lines—it won’t price-match smaller local movers. We also like that Safeway offers a convenient online inventory tool to get a quote, whereas some companies require in-home visits or make you call and speak to a rep.

If you live in a community with a Homeowners Association (HOA), Safeway could be a great option. It specializes in HOA moves and has experience with the specific access rules and timing restrictions in these neighborhoods. This can prevent delays and fines associated with noncompliance, which other companies may be less familiar with.

We don’t like that Safeway only offers two insurance options, which can feel limiting if you’re moving high-value or delicate items across Texas. Basic released-value protection offers minimal coverage, while full-value protection is more comprehensive but will increase your total cost. Interstate moving companies must also be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to legally operate across state lines.

TxDMV has a moving checklist that outlines things to look out for when choosing a moving company. For example, the checklist mentions that customers should request a written proposal before loading any items onto the moving truck. If you have a complaint about a mover, you can report it directly to the TxDMV for investigation.


Nailing Down Your Moving Timeline

Figuring out your moving timeline will help you have a stress-free relocation. Here’s our recommended weekly breakdown:

  • Eight weeks before: Make a list to start inventorying and categorizing your belongings. Use your list to gather accurate moving quotes. 
  • Six weeks before: Choose a moving company and book your date. Begin packing nonessential items, like decor and artwork.
  • Four weeks before: Continue packing nonessentials and arrange to transfer your utilities and services, including subscriptions and memberships.
  • Two weeks before: Pack semi-essential belongings, such as silverware, plates, and toiletries, and file a change of address with USPS.
  • Moving week: Finishing packing any remaining items. We recommend transporting essentials, like medications and sentimental items, yourself, so you can ensure they won’t get lost in the move. Do a final walkthrough of your current residence.

Advice From a Moving Customer

Full-service moving companies are our No. 1 choice for relocations, but homeowners looking to save money or who like handling their items themselves may prefer a rental truck. We spoke to Terry O., a moving customer who moved from Florida to Texas in 2023 who used a Penske truck. 

“I moved in the middle of summer, which wasn’t ideal. Coming from Florida was hot enough, and Texas was like 105 degrees. The truck was very clean, though, and it was overall a good experience.”

Terry towed his car during the first half of his move using Penske’s tow dolly service. He sold his car during his move. “It was very convenient. [Penske] allowed me to take the car dolly, and once I sold my car, I was able to cancel the reservation without any additional fees.”

While Terry had a positive experience with his truck rental, he mentioned that driving it was “challenging” since it was his first time operating such a large vehicle. He also said parking the truck was a hassle at times. This experience reflects the reality many DIY movers face: While renting a truck can be practical, it also demands some familiarity with handling a large vehicle.

If you go the DIY-move route, we recommend that you practice driving the moving truck in an empty parking lot to get comfortable with the vehicle’s size and handling. You may also want to bring someone along on your move, as Terry did, to help you with navigation and parking.

  • Service offerings: We compiled each mover’s service offerings to see which company had the most comprehensive options. Higher scores went to movers offering a range of services, from packing and unloading to vehicle shipping.
  • Item protection: We weighed in on each mover’s insurance options and protection services, like GPS tracking, crating, and storage. Companies that offer more than the two required insurance options and several protection services received the most points.
  • Scheduling: We awarded the most points to movers with accessible scheduling processes, mobile apps, and multiple contact methods.
