When general contractor Tom Silva brought a double-ended, springy, pointy tool to the shop, he wanted to see if the team knew what it was. After a few colorful guesses, Tom tells them the truth.
It’s Not Kevin’s Toothpick
Host Kevin O’Connor’s guess made everyone cringe. He said he uses it as a mechanical toothpick, breaking heavy-duty jams out from between his teeth. Corn, celery, and ribs were his favorite uses. After demonstrating, his smile will never be the same.
Mark Has Two—One for Each Nostril
Mason Mark McCullough proudly states that he keeps two in his truck. Anytime he has an obstruction in his nose, he reaches for his to knock it loose. He claims it’s to keep his brick-laying hands clean, but we’re not buying it.
It’s Richard’s Great-Grandpa’s Angle Gauge
Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey says Tom’s spring-loaded tool reminded him of his great-grandfather, Ephus. He says that when copper fittings first hit the scene, Ephus didn’t trust them. He used to bend the tool to check the angles of the fittings—a trick we’re still trying to figure out.
It’s Actually a Nail Set
After hearing the team carry on, Tom sets the record straight by revealing that his mystery tool is actually a nail set. Whenever a nail stands proud of a piece of trim, Tom is able to align the tip of the tool on the head, pull back the spring, and let it fly. The impact pushes the nail head below the surface, providing a perfect finish.
