TOH’s 45th season wraps up in grand style with this 1887 gem, which has been restored to its original architectural splendor. Ready for another 100+ years, the house is better than ever—with all new HVAC and mechanicals for comfort, an airtight envelope for energy efficiency, and a new interior layout ideal for multiple generations of the same family to live under one roof.
S45 E26: Next-Generation Victorian
Eleven months ago, construction began on an 1887 Victorian in Glen Ridge, NJ, to turn it into a home suitable for multigenerational living. The renovation is complete, and the crew is back for a tour.
S45 E25: Spring Forward
A built-in bench is constructed using salvaged material. The primary bathroom vanity gets a new finish. A new landscape is designed, and cabinet crown molding and recessed lighting are installed.
S45 E24: Tested and Approved
The result of a blower door test is revealed, determining the home's airtightness. A baseboard detail becomes a focal point, and a prefabricated shower niche and interior window casing are installed.

The local shop where the new stairs are fabricated is toured. A new brick walkway adds curb appeal. Wood fiber insulation is installed, and HRVs, ERVs, and period trim details are discussed.

The homeowner designs a custom stained-glass sidelight, vapor-tight electrical boxes are roughed in, and a custom jamb and threshold are built. Various types of water-resistive barriers are compared.
