This project is an excellent way to introduce the soothing sounds of flowing water to your yard or garden. With the right materials and some effort, you can install a beautiful fountain that will become a focal point in your outdoor living area. In the video above, This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook demonstrates how to install a garden fountain, and we’ll share additional guidance below.
Preparing the Garden Fountain Site
Before you install your garden fountain, you’ll need to choose and prepare the site to ensure a stable foundation for your water feature and prevent future issues.
Choosing the Location
Select a spot in your garden that’s visible from your favorite outdoor seating area or from inside your home. Consider the following factors:
- Adequate drainage to prevent water accumulation
- Level ground or an area that you can easily level
- Proximity to a power source (if using an electric pump)
- Sun exposure (for solar-powered fountains)
Installing the Garden Fountain Components
Once you’ve chosen an ideal location, follow our step-by-step guide below to install your new garden fountain:
- Use a pointed spade to remove all the topsoil from the area.
- Cover the area with a mixture of ¾-inch crushed stone and stone dust, then rake the stone smooth.
- Use a hand tamper to compact the stone base.
- Add more crushed stone to level the base with the surrounding grade, then compact the area again.
- Spread more stone dust over the crushed stone base, then compact it with the hand tamper.
- Check the stone base for level.
- Set the cast stone (concrete) base into place and check it for level.
- If one end of the base is low, add some stone dust underneath, then check again for level. If necessary, use a rubber mallet to pound the base into level alignment.
- Set the fountain’s basin on top of the concrete base and check it for level.
- Place the solar-powered submersible pump inside the fountain’s basin.
- Stake the solar panel into the ground a few feet from the fountain, ensuring the panel faces south.
- Run the power cord from the pump to the solar panel.
- Insert the rubber plug into the hole in the basin to seal the power cord and prevent water from leaking out.
- Hold the fountain’s top over the basin and have a helper feed the pump hose through the top’s center hole.
- Set the top down onto the basin, making sure it’s centered.
- Fill the fountain’s basin with water.
- Bury the power cord in a shallow trench, then plug it into the solar panel to activate the pump.
Garden Fountain Maintenance Tips
To keep your garden fountain running smoothly, routinely perform the following maintenance tasks:
- Check and clean the pump’s filter periodically.
- Clean the basin and pump regularly to prevent algae growth.
- Protect the fountain from freezing temperatures in winter.
- Top up water levels as needed, especially during hot weather.
Choosing the Right Fountain Type
When selecting a garden fountain, consider the various types available. The choice depends on your aesthetic preferences, garden size, and budget. Here are some popular options:
- Self-contained fountains: Perfect for those who want a hassle-free installation, these fountains come with everything integrated, including the basin and pump.
- Tiered fountains: These classic fountains feature multiple levels from which water cascades down. Tiered fountains are larger and can serve as eye-catching centerpieces in any garden.
- Wall fountains: Ideal for smaller spaces, you would mount these fountains on a wall to create a stunning focal point without taking up much ground space.
Enhancing the Fountain Area
A garden fountain can be more than just a stand-alone feature. Enhance the area around your fountain to create a more inviting space by doing the following:
- Adding seating: Create a relaxing retreat by incorporating comfortable seating near your fountain, such as garden benches or a set of weather-resistant chairs that match your outdoor decor.
- Creating a pathway: A well-defined pathway leading to your fountain can enhance its visual appeal. Use stepping stones, gravel, or brick to create a path that complements your garden’s design.
- Incorporating plants: Surround your fountain with various plants to soften its appearance and blend it with the natural environment. Choose plants that thrive in moist conditions.
Seasonal Fountain Care and Winterization
Prioritizing seasonal care and winterization can help prevent damage and extend your fountain’s lifespan. Below, we’ll share some seasonal and general maintenance tips.
Regular Maintenance
Consider the following maintenance tips to keep your fountain in good shape:
- Checking water levels: Evaporation can reduce water levels, so regularly top up the basin to keep the pump submerged.
- Cleaning the fountain: Remove debris such as leaves and twigs that can accumulate in the basin and pump.
- Inspecting the pump: Ensure the pump is functioning correctly.
Fall Preparations
Consider taking the following precautionary measures ahead of the colder fall and winter months to protect your fountain from extreme temperatures:
- Covering the fountain: Use a tarp to protect it from harsh winter conditions.
- Draining the fountain: Empty the basin to prevent water from freezing and causing cracks.
- Removing the pump: Take out the pump and store it indoors to prevent freeze damage.
Troubleshooting Common Fountain Issues
Even with proper maintenance, you may encounter some common issues with your garden fountain. Here’s how to address them:
Low Water Flow
If your fountain’s water flow is weak, check for the following potential causes:
- Clogged filter: Clean or replace the pump’s filter to restore optimal performance.
- Obstructions: Debris in the pump or tubing can restrict water flow. Clean these components regularly.
- Pump position: Ensure the pump is fully submerged and correctly positioned.
Algae Growth
Algae can turn your fountain green and cause unpleasant odors. To prevent algae growth, do the following:
- Clean regularly: Scrub the basin and components to remove algae buildup.
- Provide shade: Position the fountain where it receives partial shade to reduce algae-promoting sunlight.
- Use a fountain cleaner: Add a safe, nontoxic cleaner to the water to inhibit algae formation.
Leaks
Leaks can waste water and damage your fountain. To identify and fix leaks, follow these steps:
- Inspect the fountain: Check for visible cracks or damage.
- Seal cracks: Use a waterproof sealant to repair minor cracks in the basin.
- Replace damaged parts: If certain parts are beyond repair, such as tubing or seals, replace them.
