Paint expert Mauro Henrique tells us how important color choice is. Mauro explains that colors can change in certain light and that more often than not, his crew has to repaint at least one small part of the project to ensure that the homeowner is truly happy. He also shares with us why navy blue is his favorite color.
Next, we tag along as Mauro helps a homeowner paint their home office. The office is covered in paneling and has recently been updated, but the paneling needs a coat of paint. The homeowner and Mauro work together to choose the right color blue before prepping the room and covering the walls in a gray primer. Once the primer dries, the two work together to roll and brush the navy paint on the wall for a beautiful finish.
After that, we meet host Kevin O’Connor back at the shop to speak with landscape contractor Lee Gilliam about pruning shrubs. Lee shows Kevin which pruning tools he uses for each type of shrub and why, explaining everything from large hedge trimmers to small hand pruners.
Finally, carpenter Nathan Gilbert takes us on a road trip to Portland, Oregon to help a homeowner and daycare provider update her outdoor play space with a mud kitchen. Luckily, Nathan has all the materials they’ll need for the project, including pressure-treated framing, cedar paneling, and composite decking. The pair work together to build the frame and shelf before installing a sink, creating knobs from scrap lumber, and installing hooks for organization.
Mauro’s Take on Color Choice

How to Paint Pine Paneling
Mauro Henrique helps a homeowner paint their home office. The office is covered in paneling and has recently been updated, but the paneling needs a coat of paint. They choose the right color blue before prepping the room and covering the walls in a gray primer. Once the primer dries, the two work together to roll and brush the navy paint on the wall for a beautiful finish.
Where to find it?
To prep the office, Mauro uses painter’s tape to tape off the built-in cabinet, windows, and decorative molding above the wood panels and lays out floor paper to protect the floors.
To prime the wood panels, Mauro uses a grey-tinted water-based primer and sealer. Mauro uses a water-based acrylic paint with a matte finish for the paint. The paint color name is “Gentleman’s Gray.” Mauro applies the primer and paint to the panels using rollers with a 3/8 inch nap. Mauro cuts in around the edges of the panels using a 1- 1/2 inch angled brush for the cutting lines.
Best Tools for Shrub Pruning
Back at the shop Kevin O’Connor speaks with landscape contractor Lee Gilliam about pruning shrubs. Lee shows Kevin which pruning tools he uses for each type of shrub and why, explaining everything from large hedge trimmers to small hand pruners.
Where to find it?
Lee explains how to use a pair of shears to shape an arborvitae.
To trim back small tree branches use long reach pruners and a pole cutter for thicker branches.
Use hedge trimmers to remove height from taller shrubs or complete a large job.
How to Build a Mud Kitchen for Kids
Carpenter Nathan Gilbert helps a homeowner and daycare provider update her outdoor play space with a mud kitchen. Nathan has all the materials they’ll need, including pressure-treated framing, cedar paneling, and composite decking. The pair work together to build the frame and shelf before installing a sink, creating knobs from scrap lumber, and installing hooks for organization.
Where to find it?
Nathan will be building the frame using pressure-treated 2x4s and 1×6 cedar. Nathan starts by making the cuts for the frame using a miter saw. He then secures the frame using GRK 3-1/4 inch framing screws.
For the countertop, Nathan is using composite decking. He’ll be using a miter saw to make these cuts as well. Once the counters are secured with GRK 2-1/2 inch screws, Nathan fills in the screw holes using Cortex fasteners that match the decking cortex.
Nathan uses a jig saw to cut out the circles of PVC board for the stove top “burners.” To cut out the knobs for the stove, Nathan uses a hole saw. The homeowner painted the “burners” with matte black spray paint.
