Carpenter Nathan Gilbert is in high demand. At the shop, both plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey and general contractor Tom Silva need his help for their projects. Despite host Kevin O’Connor’s willingness to chip in, the two pros decide to split Nathan between their projects.
First, Nathan heads to a project with Richard to help a homeowner age in place. Knowing that bathroom safety is a major concern for elderly adults, Nathan helps the homeowner choose a location for some ADA-compliant grab bars. The two work together to find the right height and install them with specialty anchors. Once they’re done, Richard installs a showerhead with a wand for our homeowner.
Then, Tom Silva takes us on a project to help a homeowner restore her wooden gutters. With Nathan already atop the scaffolding, the team of Nathan, his father, and Tom work together to inspect the existing gutters and to trace their profile for replacements. Then, after removing the existing gutters and fascia, they put new rafter tails in place, installed the new fascia board, and customized the stock wooden gutter to fit before finishing it with boiled linseed oil.
Shower Upgrades for Aging in Place
When a homeowner needed the help of the Ask This Old House team for help with her plans for aging in place, carpenter Nathan Gilbert and heating and plumbing expert Richard Trethewey answered the call. After finding the home mostly suitable and ready for the homeowner’s next stages in life, they learned that the bathroom needed attention. Here’s how they made it safer for aging in place.
How to Replace Wooden Gutters
When a homeowner’s wooden gutters started leaking, all the contractors in her area told her it was time to switch to aluminum. But her late husband loved their home’s period-correct style, so she didn’t want to go against his wishes. She called the team at Ask This Old House for help, and general contractor Tom Silva and carpenter Nathan Gilbert (with the help of his father, Bill Gilbert) knew just how to handle it.
